Health and Physical Education
Physical Education (PE) is a compulsory subject for all students at Melrose High School. Students in Years 9 and 10 select their semester units from a choice of programmes or complete a general Physical Education and Health unit. Students in years 7 and 8 complete a dynamic programme with a strong emphasis on fitness and skill development.
Electives
Students can also elect an additional unit during each semester. Outdoor Education is available each semester while Sports Coaching is available in second semester. These courses have specific curriculum content and do not include the integrated core topics.
Enrichment Activities
The Aspiring Athletes Program (AAP) in PE provides the opportunity for students to achieve academically while continuing their commitment to their chosen team and/or individual sport. It also provides tutorial time for students to ensure academic requirements are being met at all times.
Assessment
Students will be expected to demonstrate:
Cooperation with others and fair play.
Competency in fundamental skills.
Strategy in games.
The ability to develop and maintain personal fitness levels.
An understanding of Health issues affecting young people.
Uniform
PE uniform is compulsory. It consists of a grey polo shirt, and navy shorts or tracksuit pants. Students must be appropriately attired for all PE classes.
Sickness
Students who are sick or injured and cannot participate in a lesson must have a note from a parent to explain the situation. Long-term problems needing a status grade require a medical certificate.

Gymnasium
The gymnasium provides our students with a purpose built indoor sporting facility. The Physical Education faculty has upgraded existing equipment and installed a climbing wall. The gymnasium provides a wonderful environment for scheduled PE classes as well as lunch time training and competitions.
